E-Challan vs Court Challan: What Is the Difference?

People often use "e-challan" and "court challan" as if they mean the same thing. They describe different parts of the process, and knowing which one you have makes the next step clearer.

What is an e-challan?

An e-challan is a notice generated electronically, often from camera footage or a handheld device. It records the vehicle, the violation, the place, the time and the amount.

What is a court challan?

Some offences are not settled by simply paying the notice amount. They are sent to a court, in some places a virtual court, which decides the outcome. The court process and its timelines are set by the authority, not by any website.

Why the route matters

  • It decides where and how the matter can be closed.
  • It affects whether the amount shown can be paid online or needs a court step.
  • It tells you which authority to contact if something looks wrong.

Which one do I have?

Check the notice itself and the status shown against your vehicle. If you are unsure, ask the issuing authority. ChallanDekho shows what the data source returns and does not decide the route for you.
